D.J. reached for the doorknob before she remembered, then let her hand fall away to hang at her side. "I'm suspended, Lou." |

"Hell, I know that. The world knows it, sweet pea. But you're supposed to be working with him, ain't ya?" Lou jerked his head toward McCall. "God knows why the captain put you on such an assignment. But he's comin' with me, so you can, too. Hop in." |

McCall came up behind D.J. and reached around her to open the door. His forearm brushed hers, and a tingle radiated upward, settling at the base of her neck with a hum. D.J. took a quick step awaya retreat McCall must have noticed but did not comment upon. For that she was thankful. She didn't think she could come up with another snappy comeback to save face right now. |

Why did she feel such a strong physical attraction to this man? He was the exact opposite of every man she'd ever been attracted to before. Tall, lean, soft-spoken, with waving black-brown hair and warm brown eyes. Kind of cute in a bookish sort of way. She'd always gone for the macho types, which had gotten her into trouble more often than not. Manly men didn't appreciate smart-mouthed, action-centered women. |

"D.J.?" McCall's questioning voice brought her back to the present. She stepped past him, careful to avoid touching him again, and got into the squad car. Just as they pulled away from the curb another man came out of the station, and D.J. craned around her neck to get a better look. |
